1-) Madrigal, Alexis C. “7 Arguments Against the Autonomous-Vehicle Utopia.” The Atlantic, Atlantic Media Company, 20 Dec. 2018

A recent article that briefly dips into reasons why the autonomous car is a bad idea.

In the following article, I learned that self driving cars seem to have more cons rather than pros. The author raises many valid arguments as to why the self driving car will not be successful. For example, the author mentions several reasons such as being vulnerable to hackers, our inability to prove their safety, and many others. For the most part, the author has opened my eyes and made me realize that there are a lot of things that we need to consider before being able to fully develop a self driving machine.

2-) Walker, Alissa. “Are Self-Driving Cars Safe for Our Cities?” Curbed, Curbed, 8 Jan. 2020

The author goes in detail about whether or not self driving cars are safe.

In this article, the author discusses the safety and reliability of self driving vehicles. The article brings up a recent incident that involved an autonomous vehicle that had fatally struck a pedestrian. Not only that but the article brought awareness to the fact that we simply do not have enough information yet in order to come to the conclusion of whether or not autonomous vehicles are safer than human pilots. Because of this article, I learned that sometimes there is not enough solid evidence in order to come to a conclusion. In addition, I also learned about “backup drivers” which is basically a human pilot that is employed to take over a rogue autonomous vehicle.

1-) Arieff, Allison. “Cars Are Death Machines. Self-Driving Tech Won’t Change That.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 4 Oct. 2019

Author talks about why they think self driving is a bad idea

In this text, I learned that the difference in peoples’ opinions about self driving cars varies drastically from one person to the next. One of the many factors for this is due to the fact that many people have had personal experiences/stories or close encounters in their life. Not only that but it is very difficult to completely convince somebody about your idea if their opinion is really glued shut in their head.

2-) Stewart, Duncan. “Self-Driving Cars Won’t Be Here as Quickly as You Think. And That’s a Good Thing.” Thestar.com, 11 Nov. 2019

The author acknowledges the upcoming trend that will be the self driving car.

In this text, I learned that there are many people on both sides of the fence about the topic. For example, this individual believes for a fact that in the near future, self driving cars will be dominating our public roads and will be completely unavoidable. The author of the opinion piece pictures a future where our cars will be our literal servants. This article opened up the topic in a way that I had never thought about.

1-) Tesla. “Enhance your commute with Autopilot”. Online video clip. YouTube. February 4, 2016. Web. Retrieved March 7, 2020.

Tesla’s ad for their autopilot feature.

In this video made by the famous automobile company Tesla, said company demonstrates to the viewers the functionality of their vehicles’ autopilot features. They show off an array of extravagant features that come with their cars. Because of this video, I learned that this technology might actually be useful for making our already easy lives even more easier. But this also makes me question the safety of these vehicles. What is stopping somebody from falling asleep while their car is on self pilot mode and then potentially causing a fatal accident?

Librarian Visit

In order to gain some valuable research advice for my article, I decided to consult Jessica Safarian, a researcher and research advisor at Concordia University.
After having spoken with her, I had come out with an array of useful information that would surely help me as I go more in depth with my article. Some of the information that I learned was the use of search terms that helped narrow or broaden my search (Boolean Operators such as the AND, OR, NOT). There are even filters that we can use in order to filter out unrelated or unwanted sources. With such a wide database online, we have plenty of information ready to be digested. Not only that but I also learned that the quality of the publication itself is a very important factor. For example, in the natural sciences field, publication validity only goes back 2 to 5 years while others such as humanities or arts go back 5 to 10 years. And finally, I also learned about the citation manager, a tool used to keep track of citations and and instantly insert them onto a word document all while doing so in the desired format.
