Bigger Picture Sources

Scholarly Sources

1-) Araya, Daniel. “The Big Challenges In Regulating Self-Driving Cars.” Forbes, Forbes Magazine, 31 Jan. 2019

The author informs us about the fact that even smart cars need regulating.

Wherever you go in the world and whatever item you are looking at, whether it is guns or cars, everything is regulated. The author informs the readers of the fact that even self driving cars need to be regulated and have laws written specifically for them. The author reminds us of how big the self driving vehicle industry is and how eventually governments have to account for them. I learned that the main obstacle for governments being late to do so is their fear about the risks of these machines. There is a widespread fear about autonomous vehicles being too dangerous to be involved in our lives.

2-) Schmelzer, Ron. “Should We Be Afraid of AI?” Forbes, Forbes Magazine, 1 Nov. 2019.

The article talks about the fear of A.I

Throughout the article, the author addresses the general population’s fear of artificial intelligence, which is the main operating system in all self driving vehicles. When people think of A.I, they only think of the negative things that are possible only when they fall into the wrong hands. Another thought that comes to mind upon hearing the words A.I is unemployment. People are under the impression that once this technology hit, they will be out of a job. I learned that most of these fears are caused due to their widespread portrayal in media such as movies.

Non Scholarly

1-) Defence One Production. “Project Maven: The Pentagon’s New Artificial Intelligence Has Been Hunting Terrorists for Months”. Online Video Clip. YouTube. March 30, 2018. Web. Retrieved March 6, 2020.

Video talks about how AI can be used for dangerous reasons.

The video talks about how Artificial Intelligence is used by armies around the world for the sole purpose of hunting down enemies. After constant use, the machine, in this case a drone or remote controlled tank, will learn how to track hostile forces and learn how to identify them and whether or not they should be terminated. This video made me think about what the possible outcomes are if the technology for  Artificial Intelligence falls into the wrong hands seeing that there is a lot that could be done with it.

2-) Sharma, Rainy. “OPINION: Self-Driving Cars May Cause Crime Rates to Rise.” The Daily Evergreen.

Author talks about how more crimes will occur once smart cars hit the roads

After I had read this article, I realized that I needed to open my eyes more and think slightly outside of the box. This view that the author had was very original as I had not stumbled across an article written about the same subject since I started my research. I understand now how taking the time to brainstorm can lead to some quite surprising and unique ideas that would bring a new perspective on the subject. It would never have crossed into my mind about how smart cars could be used as remote controlled weapons for kidnapping or drug runs.

Cultural Work

1-) Renato Gasato. “GTA V Self Driving Car with Deep Learning”. Online Video Clip. YouTube. August 25, 2017. Web. Retrieved March 4, 2020.

A person uses a video game to teach his A.I program how to drive properly.

In the following video, a programmer uses a video game as a virtual sandbox in order for his artificial intelligence program to undergo what is called Machine Learning. The person who has created the video used a program that is used in real life in order to create an A.I program that will be able to drive cars while obeying road rules. As the video progresses, we can see how the A.I improves and learns new things as it hits the roads. We also see what the machine is processing into its “mind” on the corner image. I found this to be interesting as this could be a way used to test self driving vehicles in a somewhat real environment without having the need to put people in real danger.

Experiential

Last summer I was able to board one of the many experimental buses in Montreal. These buses were rolled out for a limited time on a small stretch of road near the  Olympic Stadium. The buses were autonomous but they also carried one driver with it. As I boarded the bus, it was a rather silent journey and nothing out of the ordinary stuck out. The bus did not have any problems following the rules of the road until it encountered construction workers on the lane and then suddenly stopped in its tracks. This is when the driver took control. I learned that self driving vehicles were possible but they still needed a lot of work as any small interruption like a construction site could mess up the entire system.

Lots of interesting stuff here. I like the bigger picture ideas of AI and its effects on humanities. I think this is a productive line of inquiry to explore for your “bigger picture ideas”. I encourage you to look for even more sources that explore what how new and potentially terrifying new technology could affect our every day lives.

Your report is well written and thoughtful. A few notes: the sources you’ve identified as “scholarly” are not, in fact, scholarly sources. These are more like feature stories. Scholarly articles are peer review, published in journals, etc. I suppose you don’t strictly speaking need scholarly sources to write your feature story, I have a feeling it will be stronger if you do include some scholarly research.

    Good work, overall.
